Election chaos Haiti
Election day came and went in Haiti last Sunday. As expected chaotic and badly organized. Lots of people actually turned up to vote, that surprised me! However, many were disappointed realizing that their names were nowhere to be found on the lists. By midday 12 of the 18 candidates gathered together at a hotel, calling for a cancellation of the election due to fraud. The candidates believed the government had fixed the election, and that Preval's man, Jude Celestin, was headed for victory...later two of these candidates , that were ahead in the polls, Manigat and Martelly, said they would accept the results whatever they were! The other 10 candidates were pissed off! The act of solidarity didnt last long. A typical problem in Haiti is indeed a lack of coming together as an opposition. The opposition is weak and fragmented. ''Everybody'' wants to be president, thus the myriad of political parties. The stakes are high, the next president will handle the millions promised for rebuilding Haiti after the earthquake. The donors are sitting on the fence, waiting for the next government to be in place. The results should be ready by the weekend. Possibly a second round with the two standing candidates mid January. Our Haitian friends are frustrated, some of them voting, many more not even bothering. The country has had its worst year, and it doesnt seem to end. Very few believe that any of the candidates will bring change. Political apathy and anger reigns amongst the population, and more so among the 1,3 million living in camps.
